The mother@work Awards 2008 Judges and Ambassadors

We are extremely grateful to our Judges and Ambassadors for giving their valuable time to the mother@work Awards 2008. Their experience, knowledge and insight ensure that each and every entry is judged from as many viewpoints as possible and our Ambassadors help us to get these messages out to as many people as possible.

The mother@work Awards 2008 Judges are:

Fiona Cannon

Fiona Cannon is head of Equality and Diversity for the Lloyds TSB group. She is also a member of the CBI's Equal Opportunities Panel and chairs the practitioners group of the IPPR Race Equality Taskforce.



Karen Dee – Head of Infrastructure, CBI

Karen Dee joined the CBI as Head of Infrastructure in 2006. Karen and her team are responsible for developing and promoting the views of CBI members on transport, land use planning, property and minerals.

Karen’s career began as a civil servant in the (then) Department of Transport before moving on to work for a firm of political consultants. Immediately prior to joining the CBI, Karen was Director of Policy at the Road Haulage Association for 5 years.

Diana Wolfin, Changing Direction

Diana Wolfin specialises in helping women return to work after a career break, giving guidance and advice on holding it all together once you get there and devising work-life balance strategies for all.

She is a coach, trainer and author who works with both groups and individuals on “return to work” skills, which include CV writing and preparation for interview, as well as many related topics. Having conducted significant research when working at the University of Westminster, she now broadcasts regularly, both on television and radio, on returning to work and work-life balance. She has also written a book, "Back to Work - A Guide for Women Returners", co-authored with her colleague Susan Foreman.

A returner herself, after 20 years at home bringing up her four children, Diana understands only too well the challenges women face, as well as those juggling work and other commitments.

Marlene J Shalton (Ms),Director, Chambers Morgan James Financial Management, MSC(Econ), MSFA, FIFP, Certified Financial Planner.

Marlene established her IFA practice in 1991 after serving 13 years as a probation officer and a wish for a career break. She now has a very loyal client bank and has established herself for some time as a financial planner on a fee basis. She contributes regularly to national press and has a weekly personal finance column in the local press.

In addition she has appeared on TV on Working Lunch, Panorama and as general commentator on financial issues. She is a long time member of the Institute of Financial Planning and is now a Board Director. She was shortlisted in the Woman IFA of the Year competition in 2002 and the WIG Woman IFA of the year in 2004.

Janey Lee Grace

Janey Lee Grace began her career as a backing singer for the likes of George Michael, Kim Wilde and Boy George, and in 1992 had her own top ten hit with 'Seven Ways To Love'. She joined Virgin Radio in 1993 as the traffic reporter on the breakfast show and quickly progressed to presenting her own show.

Janey has also notched up several television credits, including Sky One's Weekend Entertainment Guide, ITV's Sunday Brunch and she has presented for the music channel VH-1, namely the weekly VH-1 For You and their National Music Day coverage. She now co-presents on Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon and has her own Radio 2 show on Saturday mornings, as well as writing the bestselling book, Imperfectly Natural Woman (www.imperfectlynaturalwoman.co.uk) and raising her four children, educating them at home.

She is a graduate in Performing Arts, and still writes songs and plays the occasional acoustic live gig.

Denise Tyler, Editor of mother@work, journalist and sports PR consultant.

Denise Tyler founded online magazine mother@work in Sept 2003 to offer working mothers practical advice on managing their work, family and social lives. As a working mother herself she started the webzine having found a lack of information and support when she returned to work following the birth of her daughter Freya. For many years she has written for national papers, magazines and websites and continues to work as a freelance sports PR consultant, having set up her own company in 1999, Vision Sports PR.

Author of ‘Working Mothers: The Essential Guide’, Denise often contributes to debates on the media on issues facing working mothers.

mother@work Awards 2008 Ambassadors:

Sarah Brown

We are delighted that once again we have the support and endorsement of Sarah Brown, wife to Prime Minister Gordon and President of PiggyBankKids, a charity which she founded in 2002.

PiggyBankKids supports charitable projects that create opportunities for children and young people, and has launched the Jennifer Brown Research Fund to seek solutions to pregnancy difficulties and save newborn lives.

Sarah is also Patron of the innovative educational charity, SHINE, and Patron of the Maggie's Cancer Caring Centre charity. Most recently, she became a Patron of the charity Women's Aid which works to keep women and children safe. Sarah and Gordon live in Fife and London with their sons John and Fraser.

Actress and author Arabella Weir was a fantastic speaker at last year's awards and we were delighted to welcome her back to present an award again this year.



Singer, author and Radio 2 presenter Janey Lee Grace has been a supporter of the mother@work Awards since year one - her support and help have been invaluable and we were delighted to welcome her back as a judge.
