News & EventsNEWS - 10 jan 07 - School catchment areas to be scrappedIf you've worked hard to get yourself into an area where your child is assured of a good school to go to, you may be suprised to learn that school catchment areas are soon to be scrapped altogether. New admissions rules, published yesterday by Alan Johnson, the Education Secretary, suggest that head teachers in leafy suburbs should draw names from a hat to stop schools becoming monopolised by families who buy houses nearby. Schools are also banned from considering parents' backgrounds, interviewing families or pricing poor children out by ordering families to buy uniforms from expensive suppliers. The new code - which head teachers have to follow - is designed to eliminate selection "by the back door" and ensure all children have a fair chance of getting into their preferred school. A recent survey said that homes surrounding some of the best state secondary schools were up to £25,000 more expensive than those outside the catchment area. Teachers should be encouraged to tailor classes to fit the needs of boys, with more emphasis on "competitive" lessons and the reading of non-fiction books, according to the review, chaired by Christine Gilbert, the head of Ofsted, the schools watchdog. The recommendation follows the publication of GCSE results last summer which showed that boys were achieving a level of performance that girls had reached seven years before. Today's report calls for a huge shake-up in the way education is delivered over the next 15 years to ensure that school leavers in 2020 have all the requisite skills. "It seems clear to us that the education system will not achieve the next 'step change' in raising standards simply by doing more of the same: a new approach is required," it says.
