The Institute of Child Health study of more than 12,500 five-year-olds found those with working mothers less active and more likely to eat unhealthy food. Other experts said more work was needed to see if the results applied to other age groups. The survey also only concentrates on single childre i.e. those with no siblings who are naturally going to be less active while at home. The plan would allow mothers to return to work after six months and fathers to stay at home with the baby. But plans to extend paid maternity leave from nine to 12 months are set to be shelved in an effort to save cash. Mothers and fathers will be forced to pay as much as £678 for each child over the six week summer break, it was disclosed. The Daycare Trust, which conducted the study, said parents faced a "postcode lottery" as shortages lead to higher prices in some areas.
