Working mothers children less fit.Children whose mothers work are less likely to lead healthy lives than those with "stay at home" mothers, a study says. The Institute of Child Health study of more than 12,500 five-year-olds found those with working mothers less active and more likely to eat unhealthy food. Other experts said more work was needed to see if the results applied to other age groups. The survey also only concentrates on single childre i.e. those with no siblings who are naturally going to be less active while at home. Read more: news.bbc.co.uk

NEWS - New fathers will be able to take six months' leave under plans to "split" maternity leave, Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is to announce.

The plan would allow mothers to return to work after six months and fathers to stay at home with the baby. But plans to extend paid maternity leave from nine to 12 months are set to be shelved in an effort to save cash.

NEWS - UK population at 47 year high - The UK population grew by 408,000 in 2008 - the biggest increase for almost 50 years, according to the Office for National Statistics. The total number of people passed 61m for the first time, with changes in birth and death rates now a bigger cause of growth than immigration.

NEWS - Holiday childcare is a 'postcode lottery'

Working parents face holiday childcare bills of up to £113 a week, placing a significant strain on family finances in the recession, according to researchers.

Mothers and fathers will be forced to pay as much as £678 for each child over the six week summer break, it was disclosed.

The Daycare Trust, which conducted the study, said parents faced a "postcode lottery" as shortages lead to higher prices in some areas.
